Contemporary Japanese Courtyard Garden

Now their children are older the clients wanted a stylish, low maintenance garden that would make an impact and reflect the internal changes they’d made to the property. They’d recently invested in a bamboo gazebo which set the tone for the design and they wanted a garden they could now use for entertaining and relaxation.

Activity

A contemporary Japanese design was created, featuring a water rill leading to a natural rock water feature, although this was subsequently adapted into a rock waterfall by Mr C. This could be viewed from all areas of the garden, and the house, giving the effect of lengthening the wide garden. The relaxing sound of running water complements the gentle rustling of the black bamboo, creating a peaceful, relaxing courtyard garden. Planted areas were designed to be simple and stylish by featuring repetition in the planting. Planting is uplit to enhance evening entertaining and the contrast between the slate and aggregate creates impact and provides plenty of easy access for entertaining all year round.

We wanted a stylish garden for entertaining with the minimum of effort from us. We were tired of looking out onto a boring garden from our dining room and we wanted a garden we could be proud of. Audrey made us really think about what we wanted and also got us to agree! She offered such thoughtful advice on practicalities which we are certain will make the garden much more enjoyable. We were impressed with the level of detail given and we would never have come up with such a beautiful design. We were so excited we went straight out and started sourcing materials and we will keep you up to date with our progress.”
